Nicholas Russel of Lawrence T Gay.

Ziade, Russel leading chess championships

At the half-way point of the 2016 National Under-10 chess championship, two players lead with a maximum of three points from their three completed games.

These are Cameron Ziade of St. Gabriel’s Primary and Nicholas Russel from Lawrence T Gay. These two players are leading from a field of 22, after a keen day of action at the St. Michael School last Saturday.

In the last round Ziade defeated Ryan Matrosimone of the US in a keen battle to be one of the co-leaders. Russel, on the other hand, defeated Kevin Perch to join Ziade, also on three points. In the next round, all eyes will be on the two players when they clash in a top of the table clash in a match that may determine who might be the overall champion.

Sitting in third and fourth position are Jadyn Gill of Charles F. Broome and Dominic Jackman, also of St. Gabriels, both on two-and-a-half points. In round 3, Gill defeated Chloe Young, while Jackman won
from Serenity Millar of Wills Primary.

A large group of players is also within striking distance of the leaders on two points. These include Katie Matrosimone, her brother Ryan, Perch, Christian Gill, Zakio Goodridge, Joseph Whelan and Tiequon Pinder.

These will be hoping to take advantage of any slip-ups from the top four positioned players.

The final three rounds of play will take place this Saturday,  at the St. Michael School starting at 9 a.m., and all chess enthusiast are welcome to come and encourage our budding chess talents.
