Women’s League action to continue tomorrow

THE National Sports Council (NSC) Women’s Football Team is almost cer-tain to reclaim their title in the Barbados Football Association’s Women’s League this year as they continue to refuse to ease up on the stranglehold they have on the standings. Remaining unbeaten after playing seven games in the tournament, the many-time champions are almost a sure-shot to oust defending champions, University of the West Indies (UWI) Women’s Football Club.

The Sports Council have 21 points from their seven victories, the latest of which came last weekend when they beat Kick Start Genesis at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex. Kimberly Ellis scored twice in the 55th and 61st while Olianna Bishop made it 3-0 in the 79th minute.

Mavericks Women are second in the standings, having won four of their seven games – a far cry from the NSC ladies. They were also in winner’s row on Sunday night, whipping Technique Football Club six goals to one. Felicia Jarvis could not be stopped, scoring five of those goals with the sixth coming from Cheryse Rollins; Technique got their consolation from Aziza Boxill. Those four wins, along with a draw, have Mavericks on 13 points.

Eden Stars Football Club Unity Stars have 10 points from three wins and a draw in seven games. They gifted points to the defending cham-pions in Sunday’s night-cap game, going down three goals to one. Tiana Sealy opened the scoring for Unity Stars, but a brace from Gabriella Lopez and one goal from Jenita Clarke secured victory for the UWI ladies.

Genesis are behind Unity Stars with nine, sporting just three wins from their seven games. UWI have seven points despite having won four games and drawing the fifth of their seven. However, failure to show up for their opening game continues to haunt their efforts towards retaining the title.

Braddie’s Bar Pinelands are the new kids on the block and they have a win and a draw under their belts to bring up four points. To their credit, they have a game in hand, having only played six for the season. Technique are at the bottom of the barrel with no points to show for their seven games. What they have done is accomplished to concede 21 goals, which heavily outweighs the lone goal scored all tournament.

The action is scheduled to pick back up tomorrow at the Usain Bolt facility from as early as 3 p.m. Unity Stars and Technique are up first, while Sports Council and Pinelands have a date at 5 p.m. Genesis and UWI close things off at 7 p.m.
