Wesley Hall captain, Ranico Rouse leaves Javen Francois sliding during yesterday’s six-nil affair against Grazettes Primary.

Wesley Hall eyeing top spot

Wesley Hall Juniors came one step closer to qualifying at the top of Zone 6 when the BICO National Sports Council Primary Schools Football Competition continued yesterday. Racking up their seventh-straight win for the season after taking out Grazettes Primary at the National Stadium, Wesley Hall now have just one game left in the preliminary round and are guaranteed a spot in the playoffs.

Grazettes never stood a chance as the first goal came shortly after the game kicked off. It was downhill from there as Wesley Hall finished with six unanswered goals. Kevion Newton had a brace while Jaden Nurse, Edwin Burnett and Amir Howard all added one each. The only other game played on the day saw Gordon Greenidge fighting for a Zone 1 spot in the playoffs at Speightstown. They beat Roland Edwards five-nil through goals from Tremaine and Khimani Cox and a hat-trick from Daniel Best.

On Wednesday, the curtain came down on Zone 7 with Milton Lynch booking the top spot. However, their final game was somewhat anti-climactic as they rounded out their performance with a goalless draw against Vauxhall Primary. Arthur Smith was the other team to book a berth in the next round, but they ended with a goalless game against St. Christopher’s. As a matter of fact, no goals were recorded at Briar Hall as St. Winifred’s and St. Angela’s, as well as St. Gabriel’s and Wills all took one point away on the day.

The jury is still out on Zone 5 and there are four teams jostling for spots. Ellerton Primary lead the pack and they added another point to their tally at Greens on Wednesday after breaking even with St. George Primary, who are next in line. Jayden Greenidge scored a single goal which saw a rebuttal from St. George’s Deandre Mitchell. The other game at Greens saw St. John Primary going down in flames to St. Jude’s. Although they are not in contention, St. Jude’s whipped St. John, six goals to none. Shamari Harewood led the charge with three while Anthony Cox, Darique Harris and Donte Gill added one each.

The other games in the group ended in two-nil results. Mount Tabor beat St. Margaret’s at Gall Hill while Providence were victorious over Workman’s Primary at Ellerton. For Mount Tabor, Dashad Parris and Jatario Prescod were the scorers, while Ethan Harrison picked up the brace for Providence.

Deacons Primary, who are racing Wesley Hall for the Zone 5 top-spot, decimated Lawrence T Gay on Wednesday as well. They came away with five goals for which their opponents had no replies. Keshawn Smith knocked three past the L. T. Gay keeper, while Kadane Archer and Nathan Gibbs made it five.

There are games scheduled for today at Ellerton, Gall Hill and Greens.
