Wales good for 2017 Digicel title

Although there are a handful of games to be played, the 2017 Barbados Football Association’s Digicel Premier League is done and dusted. The fat lady cleared her pipes on Sunday night as Weymouth Wales moved to an unassailable 40 points at the top of the table after edging out Rendezvous in a heated night-cap game.

With the second-placed team and greater of the rival contenders, Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme, pulling out a goalless draw in the prior game at the Wildey Astro Turf, it was a single goal that saw Wales securing their first top-tier title since 2012.

Wales could taste the victory in the air and played their hearts out for the full 90. However, it was just 10 minutes in when the goal came and in an awkward twist, an unfortunate instance saw Roy Richards putting the ball in his own net. Rendezvous would try to fight back, but failed to get past a solid Wales defence. On the other side, Wales came close several times to expanding the margin, but could not finish.

The evening’s first game saw Home Improvement and Hardware Supplies Waterford Compton United failing to get out of the red as they went down in flames to Paradise. Armando Lashley came out of the exchange with three more goals to add to his tally this season after racking up a hat-trick in the first half. He beat the keeper in the 25th, 31st and 44th minutes while Zico Phillips (18th) and Chai Lloyd (26th) added two more to bring up the 5-0 result.

The soldiers were held to their draw and away from the title by Clayton’s Kola Tonic Notre Dame.

The league is set to continue this week with games slated for today, Saturday and Sunday at the Wildey Astro Turf.
