St. Michael, Harrison College win 2019 BSSAC XC

The St. Michael School continues to show dominance in the Powerade Barbados Secondary Schools Athletics Championships (BSSAC), this time by winning the BSSAC Girls Cross Country (XC) Finals on Friday morning, while Harrison College copped the Boys.

The conditions were hot and windy under clear skies at the beautiful National Botanical Gardens in Waterford, where the racing took place. The well organised Powerade event saw over 650 students attack the cross country course in six categories, First Form (2000m), U15 Girls (2000m) and Boys (3K) and Senior Boys 4K and Girls (2500m).

Matching their BSSAC championship results from 2018, The St. Michael School (SMS) won the girls title with 300, just ahead of Springer Memorial with 317. The battle for third was tight but Christ Church Foundation took the final podium position with 405 points ahead of Harrison College on 416 and Combermere with 424. Harrison College (HC) did a similar feat, winning the Boys XC with the lowest point total of 326 points followed by Queen’s College with 366 for second. Third place went to the Alleyne School with a distant 438, Combermere was fourth with 517 and Foundation fifth on 529 points.

Ashlyn Simmons and teammate Kadia Rock won gold and silver for Alexandra in the First Form Girls Cross Country with Simmons clocking 7:48.53 and Rock 8:13.96 minutes. In third was Aniya Nurse of the Alleyne School with a time of 8:14.63. Springer Memorial won the overall First Form Girls title with 38 points. The First Form Boys honors was taken by St. George Secondary School with 99 points after spirited runs by Shavari Greenidge-Lewis who finished first in 7:18.40 minutes and Mwamba Browne in third in 7:33.10 minutes. Asher Lashley of SMS was second in 7:22.91.

The U15 Girls was won by Jakayla Waterman of Parkinson Secondary in 8:02.12 minutes chased by Dicoreya Collymore of SMS who crossed in 8:03.82 minutes and Deniesha Forde of Foundation in 8:15.33. SMS were the overall winners however with an impressive team score of 63. HC won the Boys with a score of 68 along with the individual winner of the U15 Boys courtesy of Matthieu Clarke with a winning time of 9:10.16 and Fynn Armstrong who finished second in 9:26.43 minutes. Christopher Lestrade of Ellerslie Secondary was third in 9:35.25 minutes.

Layla Haynes brought some glory for Harrison College in the girls Division when she won the Senior Girls Cross Country race in 9:32.94 minutes ahead of Daesha Brathwaite of Combermere with a time of 9:34.46 and Ashley Weekes of SMS in 10.27.35. HC went on to take the overall Senior Girls honors with the second best team score for the day with 40. Making it a sweep of the individual and overall championships, HC also won the Senior Boys with 73 points and also the individual race with Daemon Dawson winning the 4K race in 14:09.12 minutes. Second place went to Savion Hoyte of Lester Vaughan in 14:25.29 followed by Alexandra’s Rick Williams in 14:26.18 minutes. (AS)
