St. Lucy pick up points at home

A home-field advantage paid dividends for St. Lucy as they were able to edge out Christ Church West-Central when the 2016 David Thompson Memorial Constituency Councils Football Classic continued on Friday night.

Playing in the nightcap game at Checker Hall, the hosts came away with a two-one win to add three points to their tally.

The home team were off the mark early in the exchange, converting a penalty in the 17th minute through the efforts of Nathan Broomes. Broomes would prove his value not too long after, scoring in the 30th. With it looking like an open-and-shut case, Christ Church West Central were able to pull out a consolation with a goal from Mario Farrell in the 86th minute.

The earlier game at the St. Lucy venue saw St. Thomas taking an identical win over Christ Church West. This time, the winners were forced to tip the scales in their favour after losing their lead. With no goals coming early on in the first half, St. Thomas snuck one in the 45th minute from Shaquille Stewart. Christ Church West found the equaliser in the 66th when Rommel Bynoe hit the ball past the St. Thomas keeper.

It was not until the 82nd, that Nicholas Griffith beat the opposing custodian to secure the game-winner.

Over at Chapel, playing at home failed to translate to a win for St. Philip West as they went down by three goals to Christ Church South.

The hosts got off to a hot start with a goal from Norrin Corbin in the fifth minute of play. However, that was as far as their fortunes would go as the visitors did all the scoring from there on.

The scores were drawn level in the 39th by Armando Lashley and that is how they remained for the rest of the half. It looked as though things would end in a deadlock but the Christ Church team had other plans. Lashley would strike in the 73th for his second of three goals, while another goal came inside the same minute from Rakim Lashley. Armando finished up his hat-trick in the 81st minute for the four-one win.

The other game at Chapel saw defending champions Christ Church East-Central keeping their winning streak alive and well.

Winning all of their games to-date in fine style, their latest victory was not as massive. Coming up against St. Michael East, a single goal from Jabarry Chandler in the 90th minute saw last year’s winners stealing the points away. (MP)
