Showers of blessings at Sandy Lane Golf Classic

The showers of rain did not hinder the corporate community from showering blessings on the Diamonds International/ Rotary West/ Sandy Lane Golf Classic.
Playing at the Sandy Lane Country Club course, the periodic torrential rain did not stave off the teams from participating in the 15th successful year of the Classic. Many calls were made to Jade Greggory, the organizer of the event to ascertain whether the event would still take place in the current weather conditions and with her positive confirmation, they came out to support the cause.
They came with the intention of supporting the effort of raising funds to go towards outfitting the clinical department of the Maria Holder Barbados Diabetes Centre, the Rotary West Scholarship Fund and to other charitable causes supported by the Club. The Barbados Diabetes Foundation which was founded by the late Dr. Oscar Jordan, established the Centre in 2014 to enhance diabetes education and promote self-management skills. C.E.O of the Barbados Diabetes Foundation lauded the efforts of Jordan who he believed was the main reason that Barbados had such a top of the line Centre – the best in the Caribbean. He asked for a moment of silence as a sign of respect for the efforts and commitment of the late Jordan.
The funds raised will also be used to augment the Rotary West Scholarship which provides scholarships to academically talented students who without financial aid would be unable to attend the University of the West Indies. In the past many of the scholarship winners have dealt with serious social problems as well as challenging financial situations.
With the sun going down over the course, the players and sponsors gathered at the Sandy Lane Country Club to learn who the winners were on the day even though they were all winners in supporting such an event. First place overall went to the Barbados Port Inc. and G4S team of Carindal Burnett, Gordan Walker, Peter Downes and Elvis Medford. Second place went to the team which included two of the tournament juniors Emily Odwin and Ciara Cornic and they were teamed up with Denny Foster and Linsay Griffith. The Barbados Tourism Investment sponsored team took the third and final podium spot of the event. Junior girl Emily Odwin also took the award for the Closest to the Pin category while West Indies cricketer Dwayne Smith walked away with the Longest Drive Trophy. (AS)
