Sada Williams smashes national record

Barbados’ Sada Williams set a new national record in the women’s 400m when she finished third in her semi-final heat at the Tokyo Olympics.

Williams who was in lane 7 for the semi-final made up the stagger on the runner on her outside and would have known that she would be running without knowing what was going on behind her.

She kept an impressive pace and when she had 200m left she was still out front in the lane.

Williams had entered the heat with one of the slower times but certainly turned up the pace for the semis.

As they turned for home Jamaica’s Stephenie Ann McPherson finally took over the lead with USA Allyson Felix just edging ahead of Williams at the top of the straight.

Williams left it all out on the track to smash Lorna Forde’s 1978 women record of 51.04 secs with a new time of 50.11 secs.

Unfortunately, it is the end of the Bajan’s journey at the Olympic Games. (CG)
