Powerade BSSAC finals cancelled

THE Final of the 2020 Powerade Barbados Secondary Schools’ Athletic Championships (BSSAC) has been cancelled.

Yesterday morning, Minister of Health Lt. Col. Jeffrey Bostic officially confirmed that Barbados had recorded its first two cases of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

A few hours later, Andrew Brathwaite, Assistant Meet Director, released a statement, which went as follows:

“In light of the Minister of Health regarding the confirmation of the presence of the COVID-19 in Barbados and with regard to the restriction of gatherings exceeding 100 persons, the BSSAC Planning Committee wishes to announce the cancellation of all events for the Powerade BSSAC. Therefore, the events scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, March 18, 19 and 20 will not now take place.

“Recognising the serious nature of our current reality, the BSSAC Committee wishes to indicate that the health and safety of sponsors, patrons, service providers, officials and coaches as well as athletes are our highest priority at this time. This cancellation suggests that there will be a need to refund persons who have purchased tickets. We will be working with our box offices to make appropriate arrangements for such. Notification of these arrangements will be made in a subsequent release.” (CG)
