Blue House's Khristel Martindale striding over the line with confidence.

Panthers win at QC sports

An attempt to have a disqualification decision overturned was still not enough to save Blue House and keep them in winners’ row for another year when the curtain came down on Queen's College's annual inter-house athletic championships
yesterday.

Even if the defending champions were successful in the protest against the call in the Junior Girls’ Medley, they still would not have amassed enough points to overtake the 1 019 put up by the Yellow House Panthers at the National Stadium.

With relays worth a whopping 20 points, the difference would not have made up the distance as Blue Vex ended the day on 976. The top two teams had put some distance between themselves and the others earlier in the day and just before the relays, Yellow were well ahead of the rest of the pack on 837. Blue were not too far off with 799 while the Green House Dragons were third with 696. The Purple House Pirates, the Orange House Cheetahs and Red House Raptors rounded out things with 560, 522 and 519 respectively. The order remained the same after the relays as the Dragons got up to 851, the Pirates – 695, the Cheetahs – 656, and the Raptors – 640.

With no clear division champions up to press time, there were a few stand-outs to watch as time winds down to the Barbados Secondary Schools Athletic Championships. Yellow had solid performances from Kamille Gaskin Griffith and Lianna Leacock who won all their sprint events. With Gaskin Griffith in the Division 2 Girls and Leacock a little lower down in Division 4, both did the triple with wins in the 100, 200 and 400 metre events.

For Blue House, it was Khristel Martindale in Division 3 and she won both the 100 and 200 yesterday before anchoring her team to a massive victory in the 4x100 metre relay. At the same age group, it was Kemar Collymore for the Vex team and he snatched up wins in the 400 metre and 200 metre. In Division 4, Sean Raphael snatched up three wins for the Dragons in the 100, 200 and 400. He was joined by Dominique Lafond of Division 1 and she crossed the line first in the 100 and 200 for Green.
As always, Jamahl Burke gives a good account of himself and he copped wins in the Division 1 200 and 400 metre events.
