More focus needed from Hetmyer

West Indies lead selector, Roger Harper, is looking for focus from talented batsman, Shimron Hetmyer, who has been left out of the central contracts.

Speaking to the media yesterday during a virtual media conference, Harper said that Hetmyer can be a world-class player in every format going forward, but that would require a particular type of focus.

“He has to be a little more focused and maximise his talents as best as he could,” said Harper, as he mentioned that is what they want to see."

Harper was joined by Cricket West Indies (CWI) Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams, and mentioned that developmental contracts in the central contracts were awarded to Kyle Mayers, Joshua Da Silva, Nkrumah Bonner, Akeal Hosein and Hayden Walsh Jr. Harper mentioned that part of the criteria for selection also included that the batsmen must average at least 30 runs in the Test and ODI, while they must play 50 per cent during the evaluation period.

For the T20, the batting average and strike rate combined must be 150 minimum.

However, both Harper and Adams mentioned that losing a central contract does not mean they are done with the players as they can fall back to the franchise contract.

Harper mentioned that they need to build world-class players and that encompasses attitude, focus and working towards that with determination.

Wicketkeeper, Shane Dowrich, who returned during the New Zealand tour, must go through a return to play protocol, according to Harper, which they have discussed with the player. (CG)
