Mixed fortunes for national teams against Martinique

TWO goals for Rashad Jules brought the bacon home to give the Barbados Senior Men’s team their first international win in recent time. Facing Martinique for the first time since 2014, an under-construction Tridents team meted out a two-one result to the visiting side as they both get some much-needed competition ahead of the upcoming Windward Islands Tournament.

Playing at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex on Sunday night, both sides held their own in the early stages of the exchange. However, the turning point came when Martinique were docked a man in the 40th minute. In the 61st minute, Jules capitalised on the numbers and put the first goal in the nets. The Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme midfielder wasted no time and had the other goal in the back of the nets seven minutes after. Martinique would not go down quietly as they beat the odds to score in the 85th minute through Stephan Abaul.

There was a double-header played at the venue with the women going first. In that game, the scoreline was identical, but the result was reversed with Martinique coming out on top. The visitors struck first with Emeline Fontaine finding the nets in the 13th minute. Barbados drew level in the 29th as Felicia Jarvis knocked home the equaliser. Martinique stole the win away as Prisca Carin got the game-winner in the 91st minute of play. (MP)
