Senior Victrix Ludorum, Sarah Lawrence, offers up a floating ‘dab’ as she crosses the line in the Under-17 Girls’ 200-metre.

Husbands hold out to take down Gilkes

A three-peat by Gilkes House (Blue) was thwarted by Husbands (Red) when Parkinson Memorial held the finale of their annual Inter-House Athletics Championships at the National Stadium yesterday. With Blue leading all day long, Red waited to the 11th hour to steal a sweet victory away from the two-time defending champions.

The day came down to the relays as Blue only led Red by four points (618-614) after the 200-metre events. Barnett House (Green) and Howard House (Yellow) tried their best in the team events, but with 554 and 491 respectively, their efforts would do nothing to tip the scales in their favour.

When the dust had settled, Husbands had made it to 732 points, with Gilkes settling for second on 716. Green had done better than Blue in the relays and added on over 100 points to end with 658. Yellow rounded out things with 585.

Husbands were helped to their final position by snatching up three of the top titles on offer. Abianne Burrowes was named Junior Victrix Ludorum as well as Under-13 Girls’ champion, after bringing home 48 points for Husbands. She proved valuable with wins in the 100, 200, 400 and 800-metre events and a second-place finish in the Long Jump.

Red House ran things in the senior school, bringing in both titles through the efforts of Tristan Harper and Sarah Lawrence, who racked up 55 and 50 respectively. Harper was good for wins in the 100 and 200, silvers in the Long Jump and Discus, and a third place in the 800-metre, all at the Under-20 level. The diminutive Lawrence was a runaway train, winning all her events. She contested the 100, 200, 400, 800 and Long Jump to top the Under-17 Girls.

Gilkes were not left out of the action as they got the Junior Victor Ludorum title from the work of Taariq Holder of the Under-13 Boys. He raked in 48 points off first-place finishes in the 100, 200, 400 and Long Jump. He rounded out the performance with a second place in the 800-metre.

Gilkes would amass other points from Kemar Carter (41), Keila Codrington (36) and Jaden Callender (29), who won the Under-15 Boys’, Under-15 Girls’ and Under-17 Boys’ respectively. They all shared their titles as Tyrique Harewood of Husbands, Makayla Lynch of Howard and Dishon King of Howard came in with the same amount of points in the respective classes.

Husbands took the other title as Terri Daniel rolled to victory in the Under-20 Girls’ with 46 points.
