Green House, the new Inter-House champions at St. George Secondary School.

Green dethrones Blue House at St. George sports

Ten long years have passed but finally another House has risen up to defeat the mighty Blue House at the George Secondary Annual Sports Day.

It took every single event, but Green overcame the ten-year challenge to take the title with a third place finish in the final relay, which allowed them to amass a total of 995 points – just three ahead of Blue with 992.

At one point Purple was in the mix but had to settle for third on 973, while Red brought up the rear with 820.

Purple took the top athlete honours courtesy of U-17 Boy Ialpha Nedd, who accumulated 90 points to be crowned the Victor Ludorum on the day. He won gold in four field events including the long jump with a leap of 5.12m; the high jump at a height of 1.60m; the shot putt at a distance of 10.20m; and the discus throw with 23.61m. On the track he was even better, winning first place in the 400m in a time of 54.17 secs, breaking the old record of 54.83. Nedd also won silver in the javelin throw, the triple jump and the 800m; while taking bronze in the 1500m.

Sasha Lorde had an outstanding performance on the day, which propelled her to the top of the list to run away with the Victrix Ludorum title. Lorde of Blue House won the 100m in 13.24 secs; the 200m in a time of 27.07 secs; and the 400m in 68.63 secs. Back at the school before the main sports day she also won the long and high jump with a leap of 4.07m and cleared 1.30m respectively. She also placed third in the 1500m distance race and fourth in the javelin.

Some other athletes made history at the National Stadium yesterday. Luke Hinkson of Blue smashed the U-17 1500m record by six seconds. His time was 4:50.08 minutes, eclipsing the old record of 4:56.37. He did not stop there and he broke the 800m mark of 2:18.57 minutes to finish in a record time of 2:14.81. Also of Blue, Trishanna Baker competing in the U-13 Division broke the long jump record with a leap of 3.57m (old record 3.54m).

Javonntè Greenidge of Green performed admirably as well to claim two U-15 records of his own. He broke records in the Boys’ 400m and 800m with 64.90 secs and 2:47.25 minutes respectively. His house-mate Teliya Callender wrote her name in the record books as well by setting a new record in the Girls’ U-13 high jump with a height of 1.25m (OR 1.23m). Last but not least, Shane Holder was the lone Red House competitor to find a place in history when he matched the record height in the Boys’ U-15 high jump of 1.30m.
