Foundation celebrate on the road

THE 2018 Powerade Barbados Secondary Schools’ Athletics Championships (BSSAC) are over but the celebrations still continue for the Girls’ Champions Christ Church Foundation School, as they hit the road yesterday as a beacon for the community.

Foundation claimed its third consecutive Girls’ crown, even though it was an historic tie for the title with The St. Michael School. Some of the athletes, students, teachers and supporters hit the road to thank those in the community for their continued support as well as to show off their trophies earned after the arduous days of competition.

Led by a police escort, the contingent left the school at Church Hill and worked their way through Gall Hill, down to Maxwell Main Road, across Oistins Main Road and made their way back to the school. Dressed in the Foundation colours of yellow and black, the walkers behind the music truck adorned with “Beacons” the crew sang, danced and laughed to celebrate the stellar performance on the track and field.

Speaking to The Barbados Advocate after the title had been decided, team coach Seibert Straughn was contented with the win and said that it speaks volumes of the commitment of the school and athletes to being the best. He believed that the girls’ title race was one of the most exciting BSSAC Championships in recent times. It came down to the very last girls’ race of the championship, the Open Girls’ 4x400m Relay, which St. Michael’s took gold and Foundation the silver, creating the first girls’ tie in history.

He offered advice for the school to enjoy the moment and that Foundation is the standard of good athletics. He explained it was not a boast, just a fact which has proven itself for the last three years. Athletes such as Nathan Crawford-Wallis, Hannah Connell, Leilani Haddock, Dominique Wood, Josiah Atkins, Sarah Belle and Romancia Odwin are just a few who did Foundation proud at the championships.
