Ellerton plays host in Thompson Classic this week

There was some midweek action when the David Thompson Memorial Constituency Council’s Football Classic saw some rescheduled games being played at Ellerton. With the competition slated to continue today, two teams squeezed in some points in Zone 1 and Zone 3.

Originally slated for last Friday but pushed back due to the passage of Tropical Storm Matthew, the fixture saw St. James North picking up three points in fantastic fashion with a four-nil massacre of St. Philip North. There were two goals on either side of the break and Jason Blackman kicked things off in the 13th minute while Rashad Phillips added a second in the 42nd. After switching sides, Phillips struck again to make it three in the 67th minute. Two minutes after, Ramon Griffith completed the four-nil feat.

In the Zone 3 game, the home side – St. George South – had a tougher time with their win, beating St. Michael North-East by a single goal. The hosts were able to fight their way back from a two-goal deficit after Ramuel Miller converted a penalty kick in the 23rd minute and Reno Shepherd made it two in the 50th. With everything to play for, St. George South went into overdrive and pulled two goals back through Rosean Brathwaite (66th) and Anson Barrow (75th). When it looked as though a draw would be the result, Shakille Belle hit home the game-winner in the 90th minute to secure victory at home.

When the tournament continues tonight, St. Michael East and defending champions Christ Church East-Central meet up at Chapel in the first game at 6 p.m. The night-cap goes to St. Philip West and Christ Church South.
At the other end of the island, St. Thomas take on Christ Church West in the first game at Checker Hall. The 8 p.m. fixture will see Christ Church West-Central going up against an at-home St. Lucy.
