Edward Corbin wins BRC 2019 champion drivers' trophy

After coming close for a number of years Edward Corbin finally hoisted the coveted Champion Drivers' trophy at the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Annual Prizegiving.

Corbin finished four points ahead of second place Ian Warren after the seven rounds of action was completed. In his Daihatsu Charmant Corbin who also had a bit of flair to his driving throughout the year and was one of the crowd favourites, had a total of 130 points and thanked those who made it possible.

In his short speech, Corbin reminded everyone that it was a team effort which allowed him to capture the title led by his pit crew chief and brother Wayne Corbin. He even thanked the marshals who kept the stages locked down and safe for the drivers to compete.

Corbin also won the Modified 1 and 2wd Championship trophies.

The Motoring Club Barbados Inc (MCBI) and the Bimma Cup champion, Warren, narrowly missed out on his third title for 2019.

Warren, back for his first full competitive season since 2013, was the Clubman 2 Champion in his BMW.

When the dust had settle there was nothing separating the third and fourth place drivers, Roger Hill and Jamal Brathwaite each with 118 points. The tie-break based on each driver’s highest overall finish gave the M4 Champion, Hill, third place while M2 Champion Jamal Brathwaite took home fourth place.

Turks and Caicos Paul Horton, who was awarded with the Richard Roett Trophy in recogsaition of his long-term support of the Club’s events, including sponsorship of the 2019 Winter Rally rounded off the top five.

Clubman 1 Champion Jason Tull claimed the Rookie Award and a $1 000 Automotive Art Voucher. The Club’s annual tongue-in-cheek Golden Turkey Award, presented to acknowledge some lapse on the part of the competitor, was won by Mark Thompson, whose off-road excursion in Alexandria during the double-header sprint ended with his car on top of Mrs Babb’s perfectly manicured Bougainvillea hedge. After causing further damage as he drove off, Mrs Babb has been treated to a replacement hedge.

Leslie Alleyne won a record seventh consecutive Drivers crown in the MudDogs Safari Championship, with his Navigator Chris O’Neal winning a sixth title; Bridget Garity was crowned highest-placed female navigator, Yousuf Patel the Class B Champion Driver and Stephen Mayers and David Reece the winners of the Shelbury Construction Trophy which recognises success in the popular Driver Challenges.

Marshal of the year went to Pat Brewster as marshals from four different crews were awarded in the categories, Rookie of the year, Most-improved, Long Service and Outstanding,

Leslie Evanson became the third (different) winner of the highest-placed Female Co-driver Award in as many seasons. (CG/PR)
