Darian King goes down to Gael Monfils in second round at Indian Wells

Barbados Darian King continues to create shockwaves on the ATP circuit.

His latest accomplishment came at the Indian Wells in the second round when he shocked world ranked no. 11 Gael Monfils by winning the first set of their match.

Visibly in some discomfort Monfils was broken three times in the first set while breaking King once. The set winning point came as Monfils attempted a backhand drop shot that never made it over the net to end the 41-minute set.

Starting the second set serving, King was moving around Monfils who started to look winded as King made him play more and more shots. Breathing heavily, Monfils had two break points in the opening game which King managed to save. Even leaning on his racquet at times, Monfils surrendered yet another break point opportunity before King had to take a break because his left knee was bleeding.

The tide swung as Monfils came back out determined to go for the big shots and ran away with the second set 6-0.

The third set King continued to battle but the 131 ranked player could not get the moment to swing back in his favour and he went down 6-1.

The two players embraced at the net afterwards as King continued to make history for Barbados on the tennis circuit. (CG)
