The runners moving off from the start of Sunday’s Central Bank Charity 5K.

CBB hosts successful inaugural 5K

Reynold Walters led a pack of over 800 runners and walkers home as the first person back when the Central Bank of Barbados (CBB) hosted their first ever charity 5K event as part of their 45th anniversary celebrations. Clocking just over 20 minutes on a hot Sunday evening, Walters beat out the entire field over a course that took participants through the environs of the financial institution’s Bridgetown headquarters.

With runners and walkers moving off from the bank before heading on to Roebuck Street and Hall’s Road, the route then took them on to Constitution Road, St. Michael’s Row and Wharf Road. Princess Alice Highway was before turning on Redman’s Drive and on to Cheapside. The final stages took them through Swan Street and back on to Roebuck Street before ending at the same point in Church Village.

Walters was given a bit of competition as Richard Lewis finished not too far behind for second, while Kimani Thomas was third. In the walkers, Anderson Maughn crossed the line first to be followed by Earl Heyllis and Don Gittens.

Speaking to The Barbados Advocate, Chairman of the 45th Anniversary Celebrations Committee Arlene Estwick said that the turnout totally surpassed expectations and could very well secure another edition for the 46th anniversary of the bank.

“This event is part of our 45th anniversary celebrations and we wanted to give back to Barbados. This is another way the Central Bank is giving back to Barbados as part of our corporate social responsibility. We are also recognising a disease that thousands of Barbadians have, so we were happy to partner with the Barbados Alzheimer’s Association and they are the sole beneficiary of the funds raised by this event,” Estwick said.
