Carlton defeats the Club United

Carlton Club overcame game some bad starts and a set filled with errors to defeat the Club United 3-1 when Round One of the Goddard Enterprises Division One League Volleyball tournament continued on Monday at the Kensington Oval Bond.

In the first two sets Carlton was made to fight from behind each time as the Club jumped out to an early lead 4-1.

The first set looked as though the Club was going to cruise to victory after leading 10-4. However, Carlton made their run for the lead as the Club was late on some of the blocks and mistakes were creeping into their game as well. All this resulted in a 7-0 run by Cartlon who closed the gap to within two points, before the Club broke their steak.

Nonetheless, the break did not last long and Carlton levelled the scores on 14 points apiece with Shakera Jack giving Carlton the lead thanks to a spike. The two teams traded the next few points before Carlton pulled away and led 19-17 before the Club traded some impressive defensive efforts with Carlton and won. This allowed them to level the scores 20-20, but it was not enough and Carlton went on to win 25-22.In the second set Carlton took their foot off the gas and countless errors caused them to sink into a rut that allowed the Club to run away with a 25-14 victory.

Recovering from their poor showing in the second set Carlton and the Club traded points with Carlton trailing most of the way.

However, Carlton led late in the set 21-18 before the Club battled back to duece the game 24-24, but it was Carlton who took the set 26-24.

After such a close set the Club allowed Carlton to open a sizeable advantage 9-3 and with the Club’s centre leaving the court briefly with an injury it was all that Carlton needed to keep the momentum going.

In the end it was an easy fourth set victory 25-11. (CG)
