BOXING GOLD FOR Breedy

With lightning speed coupled with power and agility, Barbados’ Jabali Breedy rocked his Guyanese opponent Kevin Allicock, and after the third standing eight count the referee stopped the match in the Elite Flyweight category.

Breedy won the gold medal in the second round of his contest in the Caribbean Development Boxing Tournament, held on Saturday at the Sea Rock Dome in Maxwell.

After a close first round, Breedy picked up his tempo and hitting in the second round, moving exceedingly fast between punches and combinations, and it was clear he was faster than his opponent.

And although he was fast he didn’t lose any of his power, and the first standing eight count was given to Allicock after a crunching, overhand left punch to the face.

Allicock tried to counter, but Breedy would slip into the gap by side-stepping and moving his head out of the way, or by presenting a tight and solid guard which neutralised the counters.

Breedy continued to move well in the contest –  countering with no less than a three-punch combination as his hands struck with the speed one would imagine from a coiled snake ready  to attack.

Not happy with the way the fight was going, Allicock tried to turn things in his favour by also picking up his pace in the fight. But this left gaps in defence which Breedy took advantage of with his tremendous hand speed and movements in and out. This saw the referee was giving Allicock yet another standing eight count after a barrage of punches.

Before Allicock could settle once again, Breedy, who was thrilling the crowd with his movement and quick escapes and side steps, was exploiting the kinks in Allicock’s defence and hitting with power, which caused his third and final standing eight count to end the contest in the second round and give Barbados its fifth and final gold medal of the tournament.

Barbados had to settle for silver in the remaining Elite Men’s fights as Derek Hyman lost to Colin Lewis from Guyana in the first round of the light welterweight contest; and Barbados' Charles Cox also lost to Daniel Ebanks from Cayman Islands in the light heavyweight.
