BDF, Wales top table in contrasting fashions

The Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme and Weymouth Wales are refusing to give each other any breathing room as the two moved back up to pole position in the standings after Sunday night’s triple-header at the Wildey Astro Turf. With Rendezvous picking up the lead with a draw on Thursday evening after all three teams were tied on 13 points, the soldiers and Wales stepped up to 16 points by securing victories in their respective games.

Wales previously held the edge on the Sports Programme through goal difference, but that all changed when the soldiers pulled off a savage seven-nil dismemberment of the embattled debutantes, Home Improvement and Hardware Supplies Waterford Compton United. Things were set in motion from as early as the ninth minute, as Shaquille Boyce scored back-to-back goals two minutes apart.

Omani Leacock was allowed to run rampant on the Compton defence and scored a hat-trick with consecutive goals in the 36th, 49th and 52nd minutes. Decarlo Jemmott eased in one in the 65th minute before Boyce completed his hat-trick in the 83rd.

Wales kept themselves in the running with a much more muted one-nil win over Clayton’s Kola Tonic Notre Dame in the nightcap game. With both teams giving good accounts of themselves thus far this season, the score remained nil-all at the end of the first half. However, it was a 63rd-minute strike from Hadan Holligan that saw the Dames being held to their third loss of the season.

The other game of the evening saw the University of the West Indies Blackbirds and Paradise breaking even for a point each after a goalless draw.
