Barbados’ Shakuan Lashley brings home the gold

Leaving it all on the line and every bit of his energy, Barbados Shakuan Lashley captured Barbados’ only gold medal on Friday when the Caribbean Development Boxing Tournament continued at the Sea Rocks Dome in Maxwell.

 

Lashley lost his mouth piece twice in the final round and could only lean on the ropes after the final bell, but it was all worth it as the close judges decisions went in his favour against Dion Pruit from the USVI in the Novices Light Heavyweight Division.

 

Each time Lashley lost his mouth piece he came out of the corner with a flurry of punches which may have been enough to give him the edge in the final score.

 

Barbados had done well to place five boxers in the 11 scheduled finals on the night but it was hard going for the host losing the four fights before the last fight of the night finally gave them a title.

 

Opening Barbados’ title hopes on the night was Antonio Rollins in the Youth Middleweight class. Rollins came up against Kenwal Hodge from Anguilla but after what looked like a promising start, Hodge stopped him in the second round to carry off the Gold.

 

In the Women Novice Flyweight Division Iniggakaya Lythcott from Barbados and Keronne Thomas from Jamaica fought for the Gold medal. However the referee stopped the contest in the second round and Lythcott had to settle for silver.

 

Ajayi Jones had another chance to bring home the gold when she faced off against Clairmont Gibson from Guyana in the Elite bantamweight Division. The contest went all three rounds but all the judges awarded the victory to Gibson.

 

Rashad Holder (Barbados) made it all the way to the third round of his contest in the Novices Flyweight Division final against Moises Arrendando from USVI. However Arrendando stopped Holder in the final round and handed Barbados their third silver of the night. (CG)
