Athletes shine at Barbados Olympians’ Classic

Aniya Nurse from the Allyene school ran away from the field to set a new Meet record at the Athletics Association of Barbados’ (AAB) Olympians’ Classic on Saturday at the Usian Bolt Sports Complex.

 

Nurse clocked 12.52 secs to replace the old record of 12.75 secs set in 2016 by Jayalia Denny.

 

Second place in the time finals went to Alika Harewood in the second heat as she had to fight Tania Applewhite all the way to the line. A photo finish had to separate the two athletes with both being given 13.05 secs.

 

In the Under-15 boy’s it was Enirco Jean Pierre Greene who won his heat after a good start and never giving up the lead stopping the clock in 12.39 secs. Second was Ethan McCollin in 12.49 secs and third was Kriston Nurse in 12.53 secs.

Tianna Applewhaite finished strong coming from down the field but just ran out of track as Jahzara Holford was able to hold on for the victory in 62.98 secs in the girls Under-18 400m. Applewhaite clocked 62.99 secs.

 

In the boys 400m under-18 it was Josiah Parris who won in 49/13 secs from Joshua Dottin who clocked 51.68 secs. Third was Darrion Nelson-Turton in 53.89 secs.

 

The women 400m was won by Asia Foster in 56.70 secs as she was the clear winner ahead of Tiana Bowen (57.28 secs) who held off Shadae Worrell (57.50 secs) for second place.

 

The men’s 400m was won by Fabian Norgrove in 48.51 secs ahead of Akil Howell in 48.87 secs and Nicholas Deshong who clocked 49.08 secs.

 

Amani Kirnon ran to victory in the  Girls 100m under18 final with a time of 12.37 secs. Second was Tionce Walrond in 12.65 secs and third was Nya Browne in 12.70 secs.

 

The Boys 100m under-18 was a closer affair with Amari Knight winning in 11.06 secs ahead of Aragorn Straker in 11.10 secs and Jamarco Gill in 11.19 secs.

 

Katrina Small brought down the curtains on the women’s sprints as she won the 100m in 11.98 secs from Jovanna Gustave in 12.11 secs and Ayanna Morgan who clocked 12.21 secs.

 

There was still no catching Kuron Griffith as he continued to dominate the men’s sprints. This time it was the 100m as he won in 10.41 secs. Second was Reco Griffith in 10.81 secs narrowly edging out Jameel Walkes Miller (10.82 secs) and Mekhi Griffith (10.83 secs) .

The second day of the meet was held yesterday under some wet conditions. (CG)
