Football: Empire get in on the Premier League action

After an abysmal start to the 2020 season, the embattled Empire has finally picked up some points in their Coca Cola Premier League campaign. Heading into Sunday’s fixture against a newly-promoted Wotton, the ‘Might Blues’ from Bank Hall were dead in the water at the bottom of the barrel. However, they were able to pull off a win that could possibly see them picking up some momentum.

After taking a win in their last game against Deacons, Wotton would have been looking to ride the wave, but the Blues had other plans. The nightmare started early for Wotton as Argentine player Luciano Cigno opened the wound in the 2nd minute before Zinio Harris rubbed salt in it in the 7th.

Wotton had no replies for the early goals and found themselves in even more problems as they lost one of their better players in Darian King to two yellow card infractions in the 45th minute. Going the other way, Harris would find himself in the keeper’s face again and buried a third and final dagger in Wotton in the 51st to give Empire their first win of the season.

The nightcap game at the Wildey Turf saw Notre Dame easing a close win away from Silver Sands in seven-goal affair. The goal spree began in the 17th minute with Trevor Mayer putting the Dames up first. Silver Sands squared things up in the 21st through the efforts of Troy Johnson, but Notre Dame went ahead again when Carl Joseph found the nets in the 34th. Silver Sands refused to let go and ensured that things were level before heading into the break as Shakado Scott scored in the 45th.

In the second half, the Dames pulled away when Mayers rocked the nets again in the 55th. Just 11 minutes after, they would be gifted a penalty and Zeco Edmee stepped up to the spot and made no mistakes with it to see the Bayville-based team up by two goals.

Silver Sands did their best to save some face and Jakobe Moore pulled one back in the 71st but that would be all they could muster before the last few minutes dropped off the clock, coming away with a 4-3 result.
