Primary School Road Tennis under way

Of the 14 participating schools in the Cave Shepherd, KFC, A1 Supermarkets National Primary Schools Road Tennis Competition, only the best of the best were able to advance to the finals.

The shotgun designed tournament created nerves and excitement as each player had one game to decide their fate with one game played to 21 where the players switch sides at ten. The quarter-finals saw Solange Holford of West Terrace defeat Anya Rollins of Deacons Primary 21-10. Holford then moved on to take care of business against Taja Carrington of Deacons Primary 21-17 in the semi-final. All that was left was to see who would be Holdfords opponent in the girls final.

Kezia Blunt of St. Martins Mangrove stepped up to be counted as she booked her way to the final with two easy defeats in the quarter and semi-final rounds. Ayeisha Waldron of West Terrace was out of her depth, losing 21-0 to Blunt in the quarter-final round. It was then the turn of Shaziya Scantlebury of Grazettes to challenge Blunt but a swift 21-6 decided matters and Blunt moved on the battle Holford in the final.

Seven-year-old Kenoja Belgrave battled down to the wire and earned his right to be into the boys final. Belgrave of Grantley Prescod Primary first swept past Kezion Kent of Westbury Primary 21-10 before coming out on top of an exciting battle, defeating Aiden Moore of St. Cyprian’s Boy’s 21-17. Dakari Smith of defending team champions, St. Stephen’s Primary will be the opponent of Belgrave in the boys final. Smith first dispatched Javier Marshall of Westbury Primary, 21-5, in the quarter-final before Javier Nicholls of St. Cyprian’s pushed him to the end before losing the fight 21-17.

The competition continues today at Rubis, Spring Garden. (AS)
