CBC bill to bring changes to management

The Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) appears to be the next state-owned enterprise that may soon see adjustments being made to its governance structure.

If passed, the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2019 will result in the abolishment of the General Manager post and the establishment of posts of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) at the island’s lone television station.

The bill, which also focusing on providing for modern broadcasting services outlines, “The Corporation may appoint and employ at such remuneration and on such terms and conditions as it thinks fit a chief executive officer, a chief operating officer, a secretary and such other employees and agents as it may deem necessary for the proper carrying out of this Act.”

It further states along with other measures, that no person shall be appointed CEO or COO without the prior approval of the Minister; the Corporation shall have power to dismiss the CEO or COO, subject to the prior approval of the Minister; and that except with the prior approval of the Minister, no person should be dismissed from these posts.

Notice of the bill, which originated in the Senate, was given on October 22.

Last month, Health and Wellness Minister Lt. Col. Jeffrey Bostic announced that the Queen Elizabeth Hospital would have several changes to its management structure including the establishment of posts of Executive Chairman, Chief Operations Officer and Director of Clinical and Diagnostic Services.
