Kolij Lions tamed by Spartans

Kolij Lions Juniors fell again in the Barbados Amateur Basketball Association First Division League competition to lose their seventh game of the season, losing to Spartans 38-49.

The Juniors have won one game for the season against the winless ACS United but have not had any luck against the rest of the teams in the South Zone. Spartans are fifth in the standings and are an experienced team with good players in the paint as well as shooters on the wings. It was a combination of both which propelled them to the victory after a modest start by both teams.

The two teams traded baskets for much of the first half with Spartans taking a narrow five-point lead by the break. The Juniors actually started the second half well to outscore their opponents 12-10 to cut the lead to three, a one basket lead. Unfortunately, the momentum did not stay with Kolij and Spartans were able to finish the game with a strong 17-point effort.

Spartans’ Jevon Lashley top-scored in the game with ten points as he worked hard in the paint against the young defence of Kolij. Darrien Dawson also had a good game and ended with nine, while Dale Franklyn and Keon Young added eight each and Andre Walcott five. For the Lions, Dale McCollin top-scored with nine points with a valiant effort though on the losing end once again. Christian Holder also played well against the bigger Spartan players and racked up eight points and got support from Zachary Nowelland Christopher Holder with six apiece.

Both teams will be in action again next Tuesday. The Lions will face off against Challengers Sports Club Seniors at Culloden in the first match of the evening at 6.30 p.m. Spartans will be playing at the YMCA against another experienced team in the Barbados Hilton Resort Warriors also at 6:30 p.m. and it will be a game to watch as the two teams are well matched on paper.
