Zero-tolerance for disrespect of CoP: Marshall

Troubling!

This is how Barbados Labour Party (BLP) Shadow Attorney General Dale Marshall feels about the offences committed against the Commissioner of Police Tyrone Griffith, whilst at Crab Hill in St. Lucy, last Saturday.

He is therefore hoping that the matter is dealt with quickly as he believes that it is important to send a strong message to those individuals in Barbados who feel they can disrespect authority.

“We need to send a signal to them that we are not accepting that kind of disrespect. I think we need to show zero tolerance for that kind of behaviour,” he stressed.

“This should not be dealt with as a special case as everybody’s case should go through the system with the same level of dispatch, but I would like to see this particular matter disposed of swiftly. If the individual is found to be innocent, then he goes on his way, but if he found guilty then I think that for that kind of offence, justice should really be seen to be done”.

Police have already arrested and formally charged Dewayne Carlo Griffith, 39 years of Crab Hill St. Lucy for Obstructing Police in the Execution of Duty; Assaulting Police in the Execution of Duty; and Resisting Police in the Execution of Duty.

According to the police report, “On Saturday the 28th of October 2017, the Commissioner of Police had the occasion to speak to a man in relation to an infraction being committed. In the process of speaking to this man, Griffith intervened, obstructing the Commissioner in the execution of his duty. Griffith subsequently assaulted, and resisted arrest in the process of the investigations”.

Marshall, however expressed concerned about the Commissioner of Police being in such a position, “I don’t know that he should have found himself in a position where he should be reporting to deal with any kind of disturbance, not that a police officer, whether at the top or bottom should not be interacting...but it is troubling to me that at that time of night a Commissioner of Police feels that he needs to come out and fill a breach. You have a police station nearby and they should be in a position to deal with it”. (TL)
