Workers come together to celebrate Tourism Day

The Tourism Workers’ Parade earlier this week provided an opportunity for all employees within the tourism sector to get together and take a break as they marched to celebrate Tourism Day.

Delivering brief remarks at the conclusion of the parade at Jubilee Gardens, CEO of the Barbados Tourism Product Authority (BTPA), Dr. Kerry Hall noted that they were fortunate enough to get a wide and varied representation at the walk.

“We had the tourism workers, we had people from the villa, we had Elegance, we had Port St. Charles, we had Sandals, we had NCC workers, we had the health workers, we had the tourism agencies, we had the school children,” she highlighted.

“We had everybody and when I looked around, I saw us all marching together as one celebrating tourism – our bread and butter industry; it really warmed my heart. I must say since I took this job, this is one of the most heart-warming moments looking back and just seeing everybody, you know, having fun together, because you know we work hard, so we have to play hard.”

Hall added that the theme for this year is one that would place emphasis on persons with disabilities (PWDs) and seeing how this group of persons can be accommodated.

“I would just like to say that as you know, today is Tourism Day – the 27th  of September is celebrated as Tourism Day – and we are coming down today to celebrate everyone – all the workers, all the stakeholders, everybody in tourism;  and the theme for today is “Tourism for All: Promoting Universal Accessibility”.

So we had specific focus on the disabled and universal accessibility is about the disabled, but it is also about senior citizens and even families with small children to ensure that we have a tourism industry that caters to the needs of everyone so that everybody, no matter if you have a disability, is able to travel and enjoy the wonderful culture of a destination.”
