Weatherhead, Agard emerge winners in outstanding youth award contest

Harrison College (HC) students, Matthew Weatherhead and Joshua Agard have captured first and second places respectively in the Outstanding Youth Award Contest, an initiative of the International Association of Lions Clubs, District 60B, Zone 3A.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony at their Second Zone Meeting recently at the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) headquarters, Zone 3A Chairman, Lion Suzette Holder said that one of the areas of focus for Lions Clubs across the globe is the development of the young people and the members of the International Association of Lions Clubs District 60B Zone 3A are no exception.

As a part of youth development, there is the establishment of initiatives to encourage young people in aiming for academic excellence and hence. It is with this in mind that for the Lions year 2017-2018, three District Level contests were sponsored for secondary school students across the region.

She said that two of these competitions were the Diabetes Awareness Essay Contest and a Drug Awareness Speech Contest, neither of which yielded any suitable candidates, although there were submissions that were worthy of mention.

However, it was a different story when it came to the Outstanding Youth Award Contest. “There were unfortunately no suitably qualified applicants for the Diabetes nor the Drug and Alcohol Awareness essays, but submissions were quite promising. This was not the case for the Outstanding Youth Award, however, for which most entries were received and the quality of submissions were exceptional.”

The requirements were competitive. “Contestants in this category had to submit a 750-word essay on why they think volunteerism is important in the life of a young person. They were evaluated on a secondary school grade average of an A or A+ consistently over the academic year 2016-2017; and had to submit a personal biographical information statement, three letters of recommendation, performance of community service along with evidence of leadership experience and/or participation.
