Wax figures of Grynner, Mac Fingall unveiled

Life-size figures of entertainers Macdonald “Grynner” Blenman and Macdonald “Mac” Fingall can now be found in The City.

The wax statues were unveiled on Friday and viewed by all present at the Caribbean Wax Museum in Norman Centre Mall. Both gentlemen are among other local artistes – Emile Straker of The Merrymen; Alison Hinds; Dr. Anthony “Mighty Gabby” Carter; and Ricky “Lil Rick” Reid – whose wax figures are also on display.

Speaking to the media, calypsonian Grynner said he is pleased to be recognised in this way, especially at a time when is
celebrating 50 years in the business.

“I feel very happy to see that [the figure] because it is good to see something happens to you when you are living. Lots of people have sculptures that they don’t know of. It is fortunate for me I can see what I have and I am very thankful. I am very happy to see what the guy has done for me and Mac.”

Minister of Creative Economy, Culture and Sports, John King, was among the attendees at Friday’s proceedings. He too said was pleased with what he saw. He added it is important “that we as Barbadians are able to appreciate ourselves [and] to appreciate our accomplishments.

“What I have seen here today, really is for me very, very pleasing that we are beginning to create a new culture, a culture of celebrating who we are and celebrating the very best of who we are.”
Both statues took three months each to create, and the outfits worn were donated by the artistes.

Museum Director, Arthur Edwards said a figure of calypsonian Stedson “Red Plastic Bag” Wilshire will be next to be created.

“We are hoping that by continuing to do this, it would be recognised that this is the way to go. …I am sure that RPB is looking forward to his thing as well. We want to do people like Sparrow, David Rudder, but we need support. We need support by people coming through the door or support by some agency saying that we will sponsor the creation of this piece, if it is Jackie Opel or whoever, and that is how we will go forward,” Edwards stated.
