United Youth Leaders to carry out ‘10 Acts of Charity’

Throughout the coming months, the United Youth Leaders of Barbados (UYLB) will be rolling out various initiatives as it marks its 10th anniversary.

These initiatives will be under the banner, “10 Years, 10 Acts of Charity”. Speaking at Friday’s launch held at CGM Gallagher Insurance Brokers (Barbados) Limited, UYLB President Allan Farmer said the organisation will carry out its first act next month.

“The organisation will do 10 Acts of Charity starting from February and we will end in December with our annual Retreat. Basically the acts this year, we will donate food items and food stuff to needy families. We are going to adopt a school and do motivational sessions throughout third and first terms of this year. We are going to donate and plant trees to 20 schools.”

He continued, “We are going to do a Feed The Homeless Campaign and Drive, but this time instead of doing Bridgetown, we will do the project in Speightstown and the Oistins area. We are going to paint and clean up a school and another one of the acts [will be] … to offer two scholarships worth $200 each to persons pursuing education in sixth form.”

Farmer further stated that a number of sub-groups of that organisation will additionally be carrying out projects.

One local company that has once again partnered with UYLB and for the fourth year made a donation to the cause is CGM Gallagher. Through its Annette Walcott Memorial Fund, the insurance company on Friday made a presentation of reading books, educational games, puzzles and school supplies, such as exercise books, sharpeners and pencils, to UYLB.

Quinzel Forde, Human Resources Administrator at CGM Gallagher Insurance Brokers (Barbados) Limited, said the company is “very happy” to be a part of the initiative this year. She explained that the items donated were acquired through an internal Book Collection Drive.

“The response from our employees was very overwhelming. …I also want to mention that our staff are always very supportive towards initiatives like these and we at CGM Gallagher, we take pleasure in knowing that through efforts like these we have the opportunity to exercise our corporate and social responsibilities to make a positive contribution to our society,” she stated.

Farmer pointed out that the day’s donation will assist UYLB in carrying out two Acts of Charity. The first will be “to facilitate a fun day for a children’s home, which we will have in May/June”. Meanwhile, the second Act will be to donate items and games to children who are in the hospital. They will also visit on a Sunday the Children’s Ward at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The United Youth Leaders of Barbados will celebrate its 10th anniversary on October 12. (MG)
