Three receive honour

THE Honourable Chesterfield Nathaniel Brewster, Susan Magnier and Derrick Alexander Smith were each presented with insignias from Governor General of Barbados, Dame Sandra Mason.

During a brief ceremony recently, the insignias were presented to the three 2018 National honourees.

Brewster received a Companion Honour of Barbados for his outstanding philanthropic contributions, especially to the development of sports.

He expressed that he was very grateful to the people of Barbados for acknowledging the work that he did.

“I can say that this is for my beneficiaries which are the people of Barbados and we shall continue to do our best to ensure that everything happens the way we want it to for the people of Barbados,” he said.

The co-founder of the Maria Holder Memorial Trust highlighted that the Trust was currently in the middle of building schools in Barbados, and among other things geared towards helping the less fortunate in Barbados.

“Education is the most important thing in this planet. We are doing this for the human capital of Barbados and everything that we do is for the young people of Barbados,” he said.

Magnier was awarded for her outstanding philanthropic contributions, especially in the area of child development.

“I feel very and extremely honoured to have this position and be honoured,” she said.

Smith was awarded for his outstanding philanthropic contributions, especially in the area of special needs education.

Smith noted that it was “a great honour to be recognised”. However, he was quick to state that he was only the figurehead of the organisation, the Sandy Lane Charitable Trust, and there were many others that helped mould and create the organisation that had been in operation for 15 years.

He was proud to note that over the last 15 years, the Trust would have raised around $50 million for the benefit of the less fortunate persons in Barbados.
