Take greater care when travelling on our roads: Acting Chief Fire Officer

An appeal has gone out for Barbadians to reduce their speed and to be more cautious on the road.

This comes from Acting Chief Fire Officer, Errol Maynard who further urged road users to be more courteous to each other and to be vigilant when using the highways and byways across the island. The Head of the Barbados Fire Service (BFS) was at the time addressing Wednesday’s presentation at the Service’s Probyn Street headquarters. During this event The Rotary Club of Barbados West and Xavier Mansour Fund made a joint presentation of a Jaws of Life to the BFS.

Maynard shared with the gathering that “the Barbados Fire Service responded to 39 motor vehicle accidents thus far for the year. This is compared to 45 for the same period in 2015. It should be noted that these numbers does not encompass all the accidents that occurred on our roads on a daily basis.”

He added that the mentioned figure is only the number of accidents that the Fire Service has responded to “and this normally involves person who are entrapped in their vehicles.”

Referring to a media release from the Barbados Government Information Service, Maynard further stated that “Barbados records approximately 7000 road accidents a year.” He therefore encouraged road users to make every effort to reduce this figure while adding that “we all have one goal and that is when we get in our vehicles to arrive alive.”(MG)
