Tablets for Welches Primary School students

THE Aron & Christina Foundation Tablet Project is now into its third year at Welches Primary School, thanks to Irish visitor Matt Crotty.

He has embraced the initiative being carried out by Aron and Christina Truss, which ensures that Barbadian children have the opportunity not only to learn using technology, but to own a device.

To help with their long-term commitment to primary schools in rural Barbados, now 16 in total, the Truss’ try to find a sponsor for a school or schools to pay for the tablets for that school or schools.

This year, Crotty provided 24 Kindle Fire Tablets to the Class Three students at Welches Primary School.

“The project has been very successful and it would not be possible to get to this level without financial support from people like Matt Crotty,” Aron Truss expressed.

“Christina and I started this charitable foundation a number of years ago because we realised that there are many children in Barbados who don’t get the same opportunities that our children get. So, we decided to do something to help as many children as possible and we started with various other projects, but over the last five to six years we have been giving tablets to Class Three students.”

Member of Parliament for St. James Central, Kerrie Symmonds, thanked the Truss’ as well as Mr. Crotty for their continued commitment to the children of Barbados.

“You have demonstrated a very wonderful level of commitment and consistency. These devices are expensive, and you must be recognised for your good deeds. On behalf of this school, I want to tell you how grateful I am for that commitment. This is now three consecutive years, three Class Three’s that would have benefited and you have indicated that you will be back next year.”

The MP told the class how fortunate they are to be a part of the tablet project, pointing out that the children at the other two primary schools in his constituency are envious.

“I want you to realise that you are very fortunate. Make the most of this opportunity, give thanks for it, treat it as a precious gift,” he stressed.

Principal, Patricia Lovell, also took the opportunity to commend the Foundation on its efforts. She noted that even though they had difficulties this year as a result of the increased National Social Responsibility Levy (NSRL), they still ensured that the children received tablets. (TL)
