Students preparing well for Common Entrance examination

YESTERDAY, some class 4 students got a taste of what to expect when they sit the highly anticipated Barbados Secondary School Entrance Examination (BSSEE) on Tuesday May 8.

Students from George Lamming, Charles F Broome, and St Giles Primary, started to gather at Springer Memorial Secondary School, Government Hill, St Michael, as early as 8 a.m., to complete the English and Mathematics papers, just as they would be doing next month.

They were dressed in their uniforms, and their parents stood at the gates and waved them goodbye, as they made their way on to the school compound. Some of them appeared to be anxious, others remained calm, but all had their pencils and rubbers in hand, ready to start work which began sometime after 9 a.m.

Charles F Broome Principal, Dr Monica Walton, told The Barbados Advocate that the mock examination is nothing new to the 95 students at her school, as they complete practice papers almost every week.

However, she noted that yesterday’s event was important, as it was designed to show the students exactly what will happen on their big day, giving them the ideal experience.

“So, we want to have them settled, we want to have them focussed, and this is how it is done. But generally, the preparation process is going fantastic.

“We started preparing the students since September last year. This is normally how we would approach our examinations at school. But the students are calm and ready, they know what to do and they are prepared to do so,” Dr Walton said.

Just over 70 students from George Lamming will be sitting the annual BSSEE, while over 60 students at St Giles are expected to do it. (AH)
