Students perform well in Oistins Fish Festival Competition

The Oistins Fish Festival Committee is pleased with the response shown by students from both public and primary schools in the Christ Church community, to the Oistins Fish Festival Art and Essay Competition.

Deputy Chairman of the Oistins Fish Festival Committee, Dr. Dan Carter recently commended the winners in both categories for the interest shown in the competition, as the students received their prizes this week, at the Christ Church Parish Centre.

In the Art Competition, Ania Trotman of Jones Private School came out tops in the seven to eight Category. In second and third place was Destiny Lane and Gabriella Chase respectively, both from Christ Church Girls’.

In the nine to eleven category, Ceilidh Bain of Wills Primary School was tops in the Art Competition. Marquon Gittens-Gay of St.Bartholomew’s earned second place, whilst Maijiah Thompson of Vauxhall Primary was third.

Speaking to The Barbados Advocate after the presentation of prizes, Dr. Carter spoke in detail about the competition and his hope that more schools would participate next year.

“This year we thought that we would involve the students in the primary schools in the area, so we decided to have an Essay and Art Competition amongst primary schools, both public and private. This was in an attempt to get young people involved in the festival and make sure we have persons in the future, who will engage in the festival at a higher level,” Dr.Carter noted.

“It was also to get the Christ Church people even more involved at the festival level. Some schools though have been part of the festival for some time, for instance, Christ Church Girls’. They usually send persons to dance and perform in gospel.
(Some) years ago, Jones Private School took part in a mini child’s parade. So it is always our hope that the schools would be involved” he added.

“So this year, we are really grateful for the number of entries, especially in the Art area. The Essay area was fairly minimal. Only one person got a prize, but it was overwhelming in terms of the art and we’re pleased with that,” Carter stated.
As such, Dr.Carter is hoping that the schools will once again prepare for the competition which will be held again next year, around the Easter period.
