Students happy with exam results

The results are in and Micah Francois of the Hilda Skeene Primary School and St. Gabriel’s Schools’ very own Ayobami Leon-Barker are respectively the top overall boy and girl of the 2020 Barbados Secondary Schools’ Entrance Examination.

Leon-Barker was the top student overall, with 100% in Mathematics and 99% in the English exam for a total converted score of 244.31 A. Speaking to the media, 11-year-old Leon-Barker said that she jumped up upon hearing the news and was happy with the results along with being excited to be able to attend the school she had her heart set on, Harrison College.

"I feel really happy because it was a long time taken to get here and I am glad it is over and I get to go where I wanted to go," explained the young lady.

The top girl also highlighted the swimming program at Harrison College as being the catalyst behind her dream of attending the institution.

"I am a swimmer and I heard they had a good swim team and I just like how it is and how it looks," said Leon-Barker.

Principal of St. Gabriel’s School, Angela Blackett was pleased with the result of having the top overall student, stating that Leon-Barker was always a focused student.

"We are absolutely overwhelmed with happiness for Ayobami and her family. Ayobami has been with us for her whole primary school career and she has always been the type of student who is diligent and focused. This is a culmination of years of very good discipline on her part," said Blackett.

Micah Francois of Hilda Skeene was the top boy, scoring 243.57 B overall. With 100% in Mathematics and 98% in English, the shining light from the east will be attending Queen’s College in the coming new term.

The top student in English, Jayden Payne of Eden Lodge Primary School was the only student to score a rare and perfect 100% in the English exam. Payne told The Barbados Advocate that he was very excited when he heard the news that he was the top student and jumped up in celebration. Payne said that he was nervous while he awaited the results, but it was all worth it as he will be attending Queen’s College come September.

Ashley Mayers of Trinity Academy was one of the top ten overall students with 242.50 A and explained that she was excited and still in shock at the announcement. She also said that she was confused by the announcement as they had called her middle name instead of her first.

"I was listening to the report on the computer and I heard Malia Mayers from Trinity Academy and I heard my school, but I was like is there a Malia Mayers in my class? I realised after it was me," joked Mayers.

Mother of Ashley, Michelle Mayers said that her daughter was focused on getting to Queen’s College and even after she found out she was in the top 10 students, she was happier at being able to attend the Husbands, St. James institution. (AS)
