St. Leonard’s host Career Day

Earlier this week, the hall of the St. Leonard’s Boys’ School was a buzz of activity as the students took part in activities which were put on in recognition of their Career Day.

Marlyn Chandler-Gibson, Head of the Business Studies Department at the institution told The Barbados Advocate that the Career Day was part of their Business Week, an activity that they have been hosting for the last ten years.

“We have what we call Business Week, where we bring in persons from the business community. They come in and host workshops and presentations for the students to take part in, and this is usually done from Monday to Friday of the week,” she said.

“This week is really to help guide students and show them what the business world would be like.

“What we are doing here today is Career Day and what we do is have a set of business community persons like Digicel, Fire Department, Police, University of the West Indies, Southern Caribbean, which is also a University, as well as a few entrepreneurs. They come in and do a presentation to the boys, not only the boys get to walk around and see what the businesses have to offer, the students actually sit and speak to them about their services and whatever they offer,” it was explained.

She revealed that their theme for this week was “Business and technology: Are we Ready?”, adding that throughout the week the business organisations aimed to tie technology into business and showed them ways for them to positively use technology to enhance their business.

Chandler-Gibson, along with many of the students, eagerly looked forward to Friday’s Business competition.

The Business Studies teacher explained that this competition allowed for the students to come up with a business idea and present to the audience and three judges for a chance to win prizes.

She noted that the competition was mainly to show persons of the business community that young persons have ideas, and these ideas could be used to help transform and advance the society.
