MP for St. John, the Hon. Mara Thompson told the students that the Trident represented Barbados’ break from England at the point of Independence.

St. John's Primary welcomes Commemorative Trident

AS the Commemorative Trident moves to the parish of St. John for the month of June, St. John’s Primary School was the first school to be graced with its presence.

Principal of the school, Mrs. Ometa Hinds, commented that it was a momentous occasion. Mrs. Hinds expounded that the school had been anticipating the visit of the Trident to the parish for quite some time as it marks a historical moment in the lives of many. She divulged that this is the only time that the country will be celebrating 50 years, and it might be the only time that the Trident visits the school as some of them will not be alive to witness the 100th year of Independence celebrations. To this end, the Principal implored the students to seize the learning opportunity placed in front of them.

In starting the learning process, MP for St. John, the Hon. Mara Thompson, gave the students a synopsis of the National emblem, highlighting just what it meant and its significance to Barbados. Thompson went on to tell them that many of the freedoms that they enjoy today were not always available; and it is thanks to the Late Hon. Errol Barrow and his quest for Independence, that the country can boast of managing its own affairs for 50 years.

Likewise, the MP for the parish told the students to make the most of the opportunities given to them and informed that they can do so by first paying attention to their hard-working teachers. She also implored them to take good care of their furniture as they are to be used by students who will come into school after them. Furthermore, Thompson reminded them that they are the future and it is up to them to learn so that they could develop an even better Barbados.

In true celebration style, students from the school engaged in song and assembled in much excitement to have the Commemorative Trident on their school grounds. Throughout the day, they all had the opportunity to have pictures taken with the Trident and there were follow-up activities after the conclusion of the welcome ceremony.
