Some of the SSA workers with messages on placards to express their gratitude.

SSA essential workers applauded

The over 600 staff members of the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) were given a rousing and festive thank you for their essential service during the fight against COVID-19.

Making their way to the Wildey Depot yesterday morning were Minister of the Environment and National Beautification Trevor Prescod, SSA management and the National Union of Public Workers’ President Akanni McDowall and Acting Deputy General Secretary Delicia Burke, as they all joined with other workers to applaud the efforts being made by the staff to keep Barbados free of garbage.

Prescod said that he could not stand as Minister and allow the SSA workers to appear to be transparent and along with the other people in the island he wanted to express their gratitude and his for the work done.

Prescod said that everyone benefits from the service of the SSA.

“There isn’t a society under the sun that could function without the service of a Sanitation Department,” as they deal with the disposal of waste and sometimes they go beyond the call of duty Prescod said that he understands the commitment and courage of the SSA workers to the country and believe they should be honoured for the work they do.

McDowall echoed some of Prescod’s statements and said that the SSA has the full support of the Union as he called for cheers from those who had assembled.

Also on hand was a tuk band as well as different staff members from throughout the island.

Public relations office of the SSA, Carl ‘Alf’ Padmore said that they were travelling through the Pine where other workers and people were waiting to salute and then make their way to the Landfill for the 12:15 p.m. for another salute.

Sending their deep felt gratitude were acting manager of the SSA, Janice Jones and acting operations manager Shawn Phillips, who said he was touched by the commitment and cooperation demonstrated. (CG)
