Sonics still winless in BABA First Division competition

It has been a tough season for the Urban Vybz St John’s Sonics in the Barbados Amateur Basketball Association First Division competition and the most recent loss against the Hilton Hawks 47-43 speaks to that hardship.

The Sonics have 4 losses and the most recent one was against the Hawks who were up 1 at the start of the matchup. The 17-16 score at the end of the first looked like it would be a high scoring game for the two teams. Sonics played well in the second quarter to take a three point lead at the half 25-28 but were only able to score in single digits following that.

Hawks outscored the Sonics 11-9 in the third and then held the opponents to 6 points in the 4th which was enough to not only take the lead but extend it to a 4 point win. The loss speaks volumes about the Sonics this year where they were actually up in the game and just needed to hold it together in the final quarter but were only able to post 6 points. It was a tough loss especially after leading with a few minutes left in the game and it kept them from registering the first win of the season.

Jamali Holder of the Hawks was the best player on the Gully Hill court for the night and top scored in the game with 19 points, a season and career high for him. George Stanfield and Ron Grant contributed to the victory with 11 and 10 points respectively. For the Sonics, the top players were Akeem Williams and Dadree Gibson who scored 11 points apiece.

Sonics are down to play the Burger King Clapham Bulls on Monday evening at Clapham at 8 p.m. The Hawks will feature next at home against the unbeaten Pan American International Insurance Corporation Warrens Sports Club on the same night at
8 p.m. at the Garrison courts. (AS)
