Shortages not expected during Christmas

Barbadians are being assured their palates will be satisfied this Christmas season by the local farming community.

In fact, according to Head of the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS) James Paul, from fruits and vegetables, to poultry and pork, consumers should be easily able to access those much needed essentials for their favourite holiday dishes.

He gave the assurance however, that in the case where there could possibly be an issue of low supply, the necessary adjustments would be made.

“One of the things about Christmas in Barbados is that you really never seem to have enough… The industry is responsible enough that if we anticipate that there are going to be any problems, that we would take action almost immediately to rectify that problem. So Barbadians should be able to get their normal fare this Christmas.

Speaking to the Barbados Advocate over the weekend at the BAS’ Grotto, Beckles Road headquarters, he insisted, “At this moment, we don’t have any critical problems.”

“Although, sometimes you hear we are short of this or that, it goes week by week,” he stated.

Urging Barbadians to buy local, he expressed his belief that while consumers were experiencing financial challenges, this would not hinder their desires for good food.

“One thing is sure, food sells around Christmas and I think that Barbadians when it comes to food, do not compromise, especially regarding our local foods,” he added.
