Sharon, Holy Innocents’ Primary Schools added to tablet project

TWO more schools have been added to the Aron and Christina Foundation tablet project.

On Wednesday, 73 Samsung tablets were presented to the Class Three students of Sharon Primary and Holy Innocents’ Primary Schools.

This latest presentation by Aron and Christina Truss was also the final for the academic year 2016/2017. Six hundred tablets were distributed to 15 primary schools.

“We are very aware that there are many parents in Barbados that cannot afford to provide their children with such a device, that is why we started this tablet project. We don’t want Barbados to be a country where there is a huge technological divide between children who had opportunities and children who haven’t,” Aron Truss expressed during the presentation ceremony held at Sharon Primary School.

“This project is very important to us. We feel that it will give you an opportunity to be competitive in the workplace. There are going to be very few jobs in the future that you will be able to do without some knowledge of technology, and some ability on how to use technology.”

He went on to reveal that the Class 3’s were selected because they are old enough to handle the responsibility of taking care of them and that it will assist them with preparations for the Common Entrance Exam. He also assured Member of Parliament for St. Thomas, Cynthia Forde, as well as the schools’ principals of the sustainability of the initiative.

“Once we add a school to the tablet project, we do feel it’s important to try to continue. We are expecting to return next school year to present the new Class 3 students with tablets.”

MP Forde expressed her sincere gratitude to Mr. and Mrs. Truss for considering the schools in her St. Thomas constituency.

“I also want to thank them too because we know that all children are not enjoying the same opportunities... We have children whose parents will buy them a tablet, computer or even a cell phone. But, then there is another set of children whose parents would never be able to buy them such devices because they can’t afford them,” she pointed out.

“But Mr. and Mrs. Truss, through their Foundation, are presenting all of you with tablets. They have not made any distinction as to whose mother or father is a doctor or lawyer; or whose mother or father is an agricultural labourer or a janitor. All of you Class 3’s from Holly Innocents and Sharon will benefit from this project.”

The MP also urged the students to use the tablets wisely and care for them.

“You will do only wholesome things on your devices, she stressed, adding: “I am going to ask you to make sure that you treat the devices in the same way as if your parents or another family member would have given it to you.” (TL)
