Sealy: Boost in Chinese visitors expected

Visa-exemption waiver agreement to come into effect

AT present, approximately 300 Chinese visit Barbados annually.

However, with the visa-exemption waiver agreement coming into effect this week, Minister of Tourism and International Transport Richard Sealy anticipates that the growth of this market will begin to grow exponentially.

He was delivering remarks during the joint celebrations of 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationship between the People’s Republic of China and Barbados during a reception held at Hilton Barbados on Monday night.

According to Sealy, “We think that coming out of this visa-waiver agreement we can move that number to about 2 500 in short time. The 2 500 can move to 5 000 and the 5 000 can then move on from there. To the point where the People’s Republic of China becomes a legitimate source for tourists for this country. It can happen. We have the vision for it as a government, we have the vision for it in tourism. Everything starts with a small step,” he told the specially invited guests.

The Minister, who filled in for Prime Minister Freundel Stuart who was unable to attend, said that the partnership between the two countries has matured over four decades to provide tangible benefits.

He said the friendship, cooperation between Barbados and China has been constant and unwavering, as Barbados welcomed the diplomatic presence of China in Barbados in 1979 and saw the establishment of a mission in Beijing in 2010.

“The presence of China in Barbados extends far beyond its diplomatic mission. China cooperation with Barbados has enriched the society in many ways. Perhaps most visible in sports, culture and education. The Garfield Sobers Sports Complex and Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Conference Centre, stand out as obvious landmarks. They have played and continue to play a role in national development.”

Sealy said meetings between the two governments at the highest level have been a visible demonstration of the relationship as well through reciprocal visits, have forged strong, productive and rewarding partnerships based on mutual understanding of and respect for one another and on the shared aspirations of our people.

The Minister stressed that the deepening of the relationship will not be boosted through initial contact but increased interaction between the people of the two countries. (JH)
