Rough seas forecasted this week

Barbadians and visitors can anticipate some rough seas along the coastlines during the next two days.

Yesterday, the Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) issued a small craft advisory for Barbados coastal areas from 6 a.m. Tuesday, January 19, 2021 to 6 a.m. Wednesday, January 20, 2021.

In the BMS notice, Barbadians and visitors were informed that the advisory was issued as sustained winds of 20 to 25 knots and sea swells of 2.5-3.0 metres (8-10 feet) are expected to affect the marine area within the next 36 hours.

The BMS noted that moderate surface winds associated with the Eastern High Pressure System are expected to generate moderate to rough sea swells in open water. The forecast also stated that swells of 2.5 to 3.0 metres could impact the northern, southern eastern and eastern coasts of the island.

Beach-goers should exercise caution

Beach-goers are urged to exercise caution or stay out of the water as sea conditions could be life-threatening. All marine craft operators should note that the operation of smaller vessels can be difficult at times of large swells.

While the seas are rough, Barbadians would have observed an increase in shower activity over the last few days. The BMS noted that a deep layered ridge pattern is the dominant feature. During this time, there will be an ‘on and off’ period of showers in the early morning, which will dissipate later in the day.

Dust haze will affect people with sinus conditions

In Monday’s weather forecast, the BMS also mentioned a slight dust haze affecting the island. The forecasters indicated that the dust haze will increase and could affect those with sinus conditions.

Acting Senior Meteorologist, Semelka Jackman, told The Barbados Advocate that although the increase in dust haze will not result in an advisory notice from the BMS, people should be aware that it will cause a bit of discomfort (itchy throat and other sinus symptoms). She added that the dust haze should gradually increase by Wednesday.
