Road repairs under way

Minister of Transport and Works, Michael Lashley is giving the public the assurance that the money secured to undertake various road repairs is already being put to good use.

Speaking to The Barbados Advocate recently, Lashley said that they have secured funds from both the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) to execute much needed road rehabilitation work in this country. In respect of the CAF funding which he indicated was in the region of $30 million, Lashley said that financing was secured at a reasonable rate focusing on both major and minor roads. The first phase he added include Flagstaff and Rollin’s Road in St. Michael; Lowthers, Christ Church and Padmore Village, Harrismith Road, Marchfield Train Road and Long Bay in the parish of St. Philip. The Minister indicated that some of that work has already begun and is being carried out at a cost of approximately $7 million.

“That, I dare say encapsulates the role that the Barbados Prison Service has to play in the overall development of our society. We develop a society by engaging individuals to contribute in meaningful ways to the development of this country,” he said.

“We here in the prison, as you saw demonstrated, identify the capacities or the capabilities of each individual inmate, and work with him or her to work or maximise their potential.
“The challenge or course comes, and I say this continuously, when inmates return to society, even some of them with skills. . .But we must continue our work to ensure that when they leave us that they do in fact not return and or in fact leave better off than when they came,” Brathwaite said.

Some of the 21 graduates were rewarded for their outstanding achievements in various areas. Best Recruit was Rachael Fontenelle, who also copped the awards for Best at Deportment, and, Best at Drill. (AH)
