Queen Elizabeth Hospital receives much needed equipment

The Paediatrics Department at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) received two Drager incubators, valued at BDS$110 000 from the Clara Lionel Foundation.

Speaking during the handing over ceremony, which took place in the QEH’s Boardroom yesterday morning, Head of the Paediatrics Department, Dr. Angela Jennings expressed that the department could not be more grateful as these were pieces of equipment that were needed.

“Last year we were privileged to have received a monetary donation from the foundation and this year we have two incubators and these are of paramount importance to help us maintain the temperatures of the patients that we have so that we can see them in a controlled setting,” she said.

“So this contribution is very significant and we thank you very much for this contribution.”

Jennings explained that the incubators allowed them to control the temperatures in which the baby is to survive as well as weigh them without even having to take them out of the incubator, which would expose them to bacteria.

Director of Medical Services for the QEH, Anthony Harris, echoed Jennings’ sentiments and added that they were “profoundly grateful” to international superstar Rihanna for her “social and civic consciousness.”

“She has kept us all in her memories and has done a tremendous job and as proud Barbadians, we are grateful that she has picked out the QEH, in particular the Paediatric Department and the Oncology Department for her gracious donations,”he said.

“The Paediatrics Department certainly has been well served with this contribution. These two pieces of equipment were on the list of essentials and needed equipment as they continued the great job that they have been doing in the neonatal ICU.”

Justine Lucas, Executive Director of the Clara and Lionel Foundation noted that since the Foundation’s genesis, the QEH has been close to their hearts as the first donation they made was to the QEH.

“We love supporting the work of the hospital here in Barbados and we’re grateful to be here and support the Paediatric Unit and the Oncology Centre here at the hospital,” she said.
