Queen’s College comes out for chain link

Students and staff of Queen’s College came out to do their part to give Barbados a hug when they headed down to the West Coast for the Human Chain Link. The event, which was planned by the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation as part of the island’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, saw thousands of Barbadians from all walks of life coming out to show support.

With a complement of about 410 students and staff members taking to a stretch of road along Payne’s Bay, the Queen’s College contingent fulfilled their mission under the charge of Principal Dr. David Browne. Originally registered to be in the vicinity of the Payne’s Bay Methodist Church, an adjustment saw the school’s team being moved closer to the Esso station.

Speaking to The Barbados Advocate, Dr. Browne explained that it was no mean feat to coordinate the entire exercise for his school. “It was difficult. Firstly the children did not want to indicate beforehand whether they were coming or not. So we sent out a letter setting out all the instructions and with those who came, it went fairly well. Our kids were well-behaved,” he said.

With the ceremony having a slight delay, Browne said that everything went smoothly on his end.

“I understand there were gaps in the chain and that was to be expected, but on the whole, it went very well. We sang the national anthem, recited the pledge and the children sang the song and you can see that they were quite happy and they are feeling very patriotic. I think that is what we wanted out of the whole thing.”

He also said that his major concern on the day was the safety of his students.

“Safety and security was on my mind. I didn’t want anybody to get knocked down. The road was never closed off and that was an anxious moment for me,” he stated. (MP)
